Kittery real estate offers beautiful seashore vistas and beaches. Filled with cobbled streets, pubs, and antique shops, Kittery Maine not only is, but also feels like the oldest city in Maine, first settled in 1623. For instance, some of the oldest houses in the state are here.
Kittery real estate is located in York County, incorporated from Piscataquis Plantation on November 20, 1652 as the first town in the District of Maine. York, Maine joined it two days later. Apledore was incorporated as a town in 1661; its name was changed to Isles of Shoals in 1665 and then annexed to Kittery in 1696.
Kittery, Maine offers fine early architecture. The Sir William Pepperrell House, built in 1733, and the Lady Pepperrell House, built in 1760 are great examples of this. The history filled community is home to Seapoint Beach and Fort Foster Park, which was originally a harbor defense. Along U.S. Route 1, the town has developed factory outlet shopping, very popular with tourists and residents alike.
The town serves as the gateway to Maine from points south with its old and more modern bridges spanning the Piscataqua River.
The federal government established the Navy Yard at Kittery in 1806. The 74-gun ship Washington was the first vessel built in the Yard in 1815.
